Taipei Metropolitan Development: Dynamics of Cross-Strait Political Economy, Globalization, & National Identity
Reginald Yin-Wang Kwok
Asian Studies Program & Department of Urban & Regional Planning University of Hawaii at Manoa
Wednesday, October 6, 12:00 noon, Tokiokia Room (Moore Hall 319)
Cross-strait political economy, globalization and national identity are the recognized factors that shape Taipei metropolitan development. Kwok will trace the city's development through the four distinct historical periods: dynastic incorporation (1683-1894), Japanese colonization (1895-1945), Kuomingtang rule (1945-1988), and global competition (1988-2008), the cumulative effects of which have led to the current policy of cross-strait re-opening (2008-present). Kwok's presentation will conclude by projecting the city's probable future prospects from the past and present urban changes. Reginald Yin-Wang Kwok is a professor of Asian Studies, and professor of Urban and Regional Planning at UHM. The areas of his teaching and research specialization are the political economy of Chinese development and urbanization, globalization in East Asia, urban economic and spatial development, and the cultural impact on urban form in Asia. Urban Affairs Association 40th Conference
The UH Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP) co-hosted the 40th conference of the Urban Affairs Association in Waikiki on March 10-13, 2010. The successful meeting was attended by over 600 participants. Under the theme of "Sustaining Cities in a Time of Globalization: Social, Economic and Political Realities," conference workshops addressed a wide range of issues such as social equity, food sustainability, housing, sustainable development, environmental policies, land use, local politics and resiliency. Mobile workshops brought participants to various parts of the island to witness local community development strategies, environmental stewardship, Native Hawaiian cultural and traditional practices, and more. DURP hosted an reception at the Waikiki Aquarium where we mingled over good food and wine under the evening sunset. DURP students also had the opportunity to present their research at the sessions. Thanks to all of the students and staff of DURP who participated and helped out!
